Dawki river, which is a riverine border between India and Bangladesh, provides a unique experience of boating to the tourists visiting Meghalaya in India.
The river, which itself is the border between the two South Asian countries, serves for boating ride on a clean blue water. The river is in Meghalaya's Dawki town, trade hub between India and Bangladesh.
Tourists in India are however allowed on the Indian side of the river only.
One of the most startling features of the river is the absence of any clear, physical demarcation between the two countries over the rivers. Only a rope held by the security serves the purpose.
The security is provided by Border Security Force (BSF) on the Indian side who have been deployed to prevent influx of citizens from the neighbouring country.
When Not In Town correspondent visited the spot, he noticed some of the security men trying to block few Bangladeshis who were either purposefully or mistakenly on their way to the Indian side.
The river is surrounded by mountains on its sides. The tourists, during boat rides, may feel scary if they look at one of the rocks which seems to be hanging between the hills though well balanced.
The bank of the river is full of stones and rocks which requires the tourists to tread carefully.
The sight of the colourful boats beside the bank completes the picture of a child's painting.
Unlike the major water bodies in India which remain dirty, crystal clear water of Dawki river stands out.
