Kolkata's Surfire The Coastal Cafe introduces new menu on completion of fourth year. Check out Surfire

Kolkata/NITN: Founder chef of Kolkata's Surfire The Coastal Cafe, Ishani Priyadarshini, has brought south India into the vibrant eastern city, which always relishes on good food.

While the southern part of Kolkata is gradually becoming a hub of cafes, Priyadarshini calls Surfire a "casual dining" space, of course informally, for the guests who want to relax and taste some good food.

Located at Rajani Sen Road along the Southern Avenue stretch in the Kalighat area, Surefire, which offers traditional cuisine from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and also Goa, celebrated its fourth birthday Thursday.

On the occasion, it has introduced a new menu to tickle the taste buds of the guests.

Chilli Cheese Appam or Ham Cheese Appams are being served here.

Besides, Chicken, Paneer, Aloo and Onion Bajjis or pakoras and the delicious Kerala Style Chicken Drumsticks, marinated in hand ground spices overnight, and fried fresh on order.

In desserts, there are two new entrants.

The delectable Saffron Baked Yoghurt that is light enough to be had after a full meal and satiates one’s mind. And the stunning Chocolate Mint pot, that tastes as beautiful as it looks.

A traditional Madurai cooling drink, the Jigarthanda, made with traditional ingredients like Nannari Sharbat and almond gum combined with slow thickened milk, has made a comeback on the menu after 3 years on popular demand by the guests.

In cuisine from international coasts, Pork chops, which were available only on pre-order, now occupy a place in the regular menu, available in Oriental Pork Chops with Bell Pepper and Pork Chops with Honey Orange Glaze.

Looking back at her journey, Priyadarshini says, "The cafe was conceptualised because I felt most of us in Kolkata think of Idli, Dosa, Vada, Uttapam as the only south Indian food.

"The truth is each south Indian state has distinct food items. So I wanted to bring the real tastes of south India to Kolkata."

This brightly lit 30-seater eatery with hand painted walls in yellow background is open from 11 am to 11 pm everyday.
