IndiGo has started daily non-stop flights between Kolkata and Shanghai from March 29, marking a further expansion of air links between India and China.
The new route is operated using the Airbus A320neo aircraft and adds to the airline’s growing presence in the Chinese market.
The Kolkata–Shanghai service follows IndiGo’s recent resumption of flights to Guangzhou and the launch of additional connections from Delhi. With Shanghai now part of its network, the airline is looking to cater to rising demand for both business and leisure travel between the two countries.
Passengers from several Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, can connect to Shanghai via Kolkata, improving overall accessibility on the route.
Improved Access for Trade and Tourism
The new service is expected to support growing economic and tourism ties between India and China. Shanghai, one of China’s largest cities, is a major financial and commercial hub, attracting both corporate and leisure travellers.
The added connectivity through Kolkata also strengthens the city’s role as a key international gateway in eastern India, offering more options for travellers heading to China.
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said, “We are pleased to commence our daily, direct flights between Kolkata and Shanghai, further strengthening connectivity between India and People’s Republic of China.”
“Shanghai is one of the world’s leading financial and commercial centres, and an important gateway for global trade. This new route will facilitate increased business as well as leisure travel opportunities and enable greater cultural and economic exchange between the two countries,” Malhotra added.
Booking Options and Onboard Services
Tickets for the Kolkata–Shanghai route can be booked through the airline’s website, mobile app, and authorised travel partners.
Passengers have the option to pre-book meals and beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic). The airline also offers add-ons such as UpFront and Flexi fares, which include benefits like preferred seating, complimentary snacks, better value bundles, and more flexible cancellation options, allowing travellers to customise their journey.
