If you are in Bengaluru or travelling there between now and the middle of August, do drop in at the Museum of Art and Photography (MAP) for an interesting exhibition on picture postcards.
Once popular as a souvenir (like fridge magnets of today), picture postcards have almost faded out with the advent of the digital media.
The exhibition titled ‘Hello & Goodbye: Postcards from the Early 20th Century’ showcases a selection of 80 picture postcards chosen from more than 1600 such cards, according to media reports.
According to MAP, ‘picture postcards are powerful storytellers of the past, providing insights into the social, cultural and political aspects of an individual’s life’.
Curated by Khushi Bansal and Meghana Kuppa, ‘Hello & Goodbye’ explores tangents of lived experiences and the Western perception of undivided India, through approximately 80 postcards, says the note on MAP’s website.
They enable viewers ‘to analyse trends in imagery, types of messages conveyed and the demographics of those who wrote these postcards’.
Visitors to the exhibition will also have the opportunity to create their own postcards and send them too.
Information: The exhibition is being held at the Infosys Foundation Gallery (ground floor, free entry) of Museum of Art and Photography, Bengaluru until August 18, 2024.
