Reaching the stars
15 Feb 2015, 12:35 pm
Warsaw, Feb 15 (NITN): Warsaw is one of the highest European metropolises. In the skyscraper ranking, it is superseded only by Frankfurt am Main, Madrid and London. And all this is thanks to the Palace of Culture and Science, which is two hundred and thirty-seven metres high and which was built in nineteen fifty-five on the ashes of post-war Warsaw.
From the observation terrace, situated on the thirtieth floor, you can admire a fabulous panorama. The clock, decorating the palace, is the third largest tower timepiece in the world.
Tradition and modernity
The first skyscrapers in Warsaw were built as early as one hundred years ago. In nineteen eight, on Zielna Street (near Świętokrzyska Undergound Station), the first high-rise, called the PAST (Polska Akcyjna Spółka Telefoniczna, that is the Polish telephone operator) building was constructed. It survived the war, similar to the Prudential Skyscraper, built in nineteen thirty-four, which dominates over Warsaw Uprising Square.
A symbol of freedom, regained after years of communism, is the skyscraper situated vis-a-vis the Warsaw Central railway station. This building houses the five-star Marriott Hotel, which has had as its guests, among others, Barrack Obama and Michael Jackson.
To work and live in clouds
Rondo One, situated at Rondo ONZ (UN Roundabout), in turn, is the most modern office skyscraper in Poland – all energy used in this building comes from renewable sources. In the nearby Złota forty-four Skyscraper, you can take up residence in an apartment situated over hundred eighty metres above ground.
The best way to see the city centre's panorama is to see it in the evening from the Praga district bank of the Vistula River - the Warsaw skyline is considered to be one of the most charming in Europe.
