Sikkim organises winter carnival

New Delhi, Dec 15 (NITN): The Himalayan state Sikkim, which has been named the best region to visit in 2014 by the leading global travel guide Lonely Planet, is all set to host Sikkim Winter Carnival from Dec 22 to 24 to attract tourists for Christmas and New Year eve.
The grand event will be inaugurated by the Governor of Sikkim, Shriniwas Patil.
The winter carnival which is organised by the state at a cost of Rs 1 crore in collaboration with Incredible India and various travel and tourism associations will showcase the serene mountainous beauty and ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture.
The state tourism department has marked Kanchendzonga Shopping Complex, Titanic Park and Ridge Park(White Hall Garden) as the important venues of the event to promote its traditional handicrafts, horticulture, floriculture and organic products among domestic and international tourists.
Sikkim tourism minister, Bhim Dungel said," This year our focus is on traditional culture, cuisine and organic products."
"Tourists visiting various hotels during winter season would be specially treated to gastronomic delights of our state, prepared by local chefs to deliver royally enchanting experience to visiting guests. Vegetarian and fruit meals will also be available for fitness and health conscious tourists ," he added, revealing the details about the carnival.
Social media and mobile devices will used as means to spread awareness and information about the winter carnival 2013 to capture tech savvy potential holidaymakers for hill destinations.
"To add more zing to the tourist experience, we have para gliding from Ani Gumpa, mountain biking, traversing at Bakhtang Falls, rock climbing at Sellep Tanki among other adventure sports," informed Sikkim tourism department.
The government of Sikkim is all set to make use of the expected rise in the tourism which is likely to shoot from the average of seven lakhs of the previous years to ten lakh this year by setting up a target to generate economic activities worth Rs 1500 crore per annum by 2020.
The state which has been declared as ' All Season Destination' by the union ministry of tourism has managed to beat Kimberley region in Australia to bag the status of 'Best in Travel in 2014'.
