IndiGo has launched direct flights linking Chennai with Réunion Island, a French territory in the Indian Ocean, from April 29, 2026.
The service runs three times a week using the airline's Airbus A320 aircraft, adding a new international connection from southern India to the Indian Ocean region.
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said, “We are pleased to commence direct flights to Réunion Island, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean region. An exciting addition to our expanding network, this destination offers a diverse range of experiences - from hiking and canyoning in UNESCO-listed national parks to paragliding over rugged coastlines, whale watching, and snorkelling in magnificent coral reef lagoons.”
“With the introduction of this unique route, IndiGo becomes the only Indian airline to offer direct connectivity between India and the island which is also home to a large Indian diaspora,” he added.
A destination blending nature, culture, and emerging business travel
Réunion Island is known for its dramatic landscapes, including volcanic peaks, rainforests, waterfalls and beaches located within short distances of each other. Large parts of the island, including its pitons, cirques and ramparts, are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The island’s cultural identity reflects a mix of African, European, Indian and Asian influences. In addition to attracting leisure travellers, Réunion is also positioning itself as a growing destination for business travel, supported by developing MICE infrastructure and a focus on sustainable tourism.
A significant Indian-origin population—estimated at around 300,000 people—also contributes to steady travel demand between the island and India. Beyond tourism, India’s role as a hub for commercial, medical, wellness and religious travel further supports traffic on the route, along with onward connectivity to East Asia.
Booking and travel options
Tickets for the route are available through the airline’s official website, mobile app, and authorised travel partners.
Passengers can pre-book meals and beverages, including alcoholic options, and choose add-ons such as UpFront and Flexi fares. These options offer benefits like preferred seating, bundled services, complimentary snacks and more flexible cancellation terms.
Travellers are advised to check visa requirements and guidelines before booking their journeys.
