Abu Dhabi/IBNS: Etihad Airways and Etihad Rail have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore integrated air-rail travel services across the United Arab Emirates, aiming to make travel between Abu Dhabi and destinations across the country more convenient.
The agreement brings together the UAE’s national airline and national railway operator to develop a connected mobility network supporting tourism, economic diversification and sustainable transport.
Under the MoU, the organisations will study ways to improve connectivity between Zayed International Airport and Etihad Rail’s Mohammed Bin Zayed City Passenger Station through dedicated shuttle services.
The proposed link would enable smoother transfers between air travel and the national railway network while supporting wider multimodal transport integration.
Integrated booking and passenger services
The partnership will also explore integrated air and rail booking options and passenger services at railway stations.
The two companies said the initiatives could create a more seamless end-to-end travel experience for both visitors and UAE residents, while strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a gateway to the wider country.
“Etihad Airways plays a unique role in bringing millions of visitors to Abu Dhabi each year, and our partnership with Etihad Rail reflects a shared ambition to strengthen the emirate’s position as a leading global destination,” said Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer of Etihad Airways.
“Through this partnership with Etihad Rail, we will explore new opportunities to link air travel with destinations across the UAE, supporting tourism growth, creating greater convenience for travellers and contributing to Abu Dhabi’s long-term economic development,” he added.
Supporting the UAE’s transport ambitions
Azza AlSuwaidi, Chief Operating Officer of Etihad Rail, said the partnership reflected the UAE leadership’s focus on developing an integrated national transport system.
“The future of transport lies in the integration of different modes of mobility,” AlSuwaidi said.
She added that Etihad Rail’s passenger services had strengthened connections between cities and regions across the UAE, while the partnership with Etihad Airways would further support tourism, economic diversification and sustainable development.
The MoU is intended to establish a framework for exploring future cooperation. It does not yet confirm the launch date or final operating details of any proposed air-rail services.
