Kolkata, Nov 2 (NITN): Bihaan Music has launched the album entitled "Sadhana" of noted classical vocalist of Kirana Gharana Sohini Roy Chowdhury recently.
This album comprises of Khayal in Raag Jog , Thumri in Misra Khamaj and Meerabai Bhajan.
Jog as a popular raga as in Hindustani classical music belonging to kafi thaat as it is one of the more popular ragas often assigned to Kafi thaat has been very deftly sung by Sohini.
While her thumri Mishra Khamaj is within the Khamaj thaat and it has been used in the shuddha (pure) form of Ni on the ascent, and the komala (flat) form of Ni on the descent, creating a key asymmetry in compositional and improvisational performance. As is popular it has been explored more in the lighter form.
Finally her Meetabai's bhajan beautifully encapsulates of a personal relationship with Krishna as her lover, lord and her complete surrender to her Lord.
Sohini , the niece of the legendary music director R.D. Burman and great grand daughter of the poet Sri Rajanikanto Sen, has already made a place for herself in the field of Hindustani Classical Vocal. Trained by Pandit A.T. kana and Ustad Sagir uddin Khan in Khayal and Smt. Dalia Rahut in Thumri, she represents the new generation of veterans worthy of wearing the mantle of the old masters.
One of the leading table maestros of the country Pandit Abhijit Banerjee has accompanied her on Tabla and harmonium accompaniment has been done by Sri Babu Bardhan.
This album has been released by the great Tabla exponent Ustad Sabir Khan and Bharat Natyam dancer Anjana Banerjee.
