Parampara Ayurved founder Dr. Debabrata Sen said mass awareness is needed to help Ayurvedic medicine practice reach all sections of society, and he is fighting a tough battle to bridge the gap.
"I feel that Ayurveda has not been able to touch every section of society at present due to a lack of mass awareness about it," Ayurvedacharya Debabrata Sen told IBNS.
He said his Parampara Ayurved is trying to meet traditional medicines with microbiology, pathology and biochemistry, among others.
"When the tradition meets with modern medical science, which includes today's modern microbiology, pathology and biochemistry, among others, then you get Parampara," Sen said.
Sen, who belongs to a traditional family of Ayurvedic practitioners, said: "Ayurveda is one of the traditional medical treatments of India. It is an ancient science. The world has even recognised Charaka and Sushruta as eminent contributors to traditional medicine."
Reducing The Gap
Sen said his firm is trying to reduce the gap between Ayurvedic awareness and the common people of the country.
"There was a huge gap between people and Ayurveda, and Parampara Ayurved is trying to play the role of that bridge to reduce the gap between the two sections," he said.
A Family History Linked To Tagores
Sen recalled the deep bond his family shares with Ayurvedic medicine practice when he said: "I was born in a family where I have seen my father, grandfather, and uncle were busy preparing ayurvedic medicine to treat their patients. I knew from those days that I needed to take the legacy further."
He said his father and grandfather served the eminent Tagore family of West Bengal as their family physician.
"I can proudly say that Abanindranath Tagore had named our establishment 'Parampara Ayurved'," the Ayuvedic practitioner said.
Ayurvedic Medicines And HPLTC Test
Sen said a proper Ayurvedic medicine ingredient should undergo HPLTC (High-performance thin-layer chromatography) Test and then only patients can expect to get the desired result by using it.
"To get the proper Ayurvedic medicines, it should be ensured that natural ingredients used for making them have undergone HPTLC Test. So, selecting properly tested ingredients is needed for manufacturing the medicines and Parampara Ayurved has been performing it regularly," he said.
"We are successfully bringing together traditional Ayurveda with modern medical science to provide the best medicines and treatments to our patients," Sen said.
"I am single-handedly fighting the war," he said.
Sen, however, cautioned his patients that certain emergency medical situations cannot be handled with Ayurvedic treatment.
"We indeed need to depend on Western medicine treatments for certain emergencies, which include open heart surgery," he said.
"However, people suffering from certain chronic diseases like diabetes, acidity, indigestion, joint pain, and chronic gastric problems can feel relieved after undergoing Ayurvedic treatment," Sen said.
"People who have used our medicines have always used them without thinking twice since they know an university-trained doctor has prepared the medicines for them," he said.
Efficacy Of Ayurvedic Medicines
Sen said he feels that the efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines needs to be established before common people, and that is one way this medium of medicine can become more popular.
"I feel happy to note that people visit Ayurveda practitioners after hearing from their friends that they have been relieved by the traditional treatment," he said.
Syllabus Books Need To Mention Charaka, Sushruta
He expressed sadness that the books that Indian students are reading in their school syllabus do not have the names of Charaka and Sushruta mentioned in them.
He said the books should also include information about essential medicinal herbs.
Sen said he wants people across the globe to recognise Ayurveda as a leading medium of treatment.
"I want to see the overall development of medicine. I want people across the globe to recognise Ayurveda as a leading medium of treatment. I want to see a Renaissance in the field. If it can be done in West Bengal one day, then it can also be achieved across the globe tomorrow," he said.
"I am trying to make people more conscious about Ayurveda and I will continue to do so in future," he said.
Healthy Life And Junk Food
He advised people to avoid eating junk foods, oily and fried foods to lead a healthy life.
"Apart from proper food, you need to sleep properly," Sen said.
"You also need to think about your gut health besides maintaining proper food habits to live a happy life," he said.
