I love portraying emotionally draining roles: Paoli Dam
Kolkata, Sep 1 (NITN) With Srijit Mukherjee's much awaited Zulfiqar bracing up for a Durga Puja release, actor Paoli Dam says she essays the character of Julius Caesar's wife in the Shakespeare-reinvented film.

"Me and Bumbada (Prosenjit Chatterjee) turn up together again in Zulfiqar after Khwato. And while his character is inspired by Julius Ceasar, I am his wife called Karishma in this film who is 'never seen above suspicion'," Paoli tells IBNS on location of the film 'Mandobasar Galpo'  here.

"There are extremely emotionally draining sequences, but there remains a spontaneous tuning between the two of us which grew from one film after another - Moner Manush, Khwato and now this," Paoli says adding it takes her months to get out of the spell of such characters.

"In Kalbela which happened at the early stage of my career or in last year's Natoker Mato (inspired by the life of Keya Chakroborty), it took about six months for me to come out of the trance of the character as I had started inhabiting within it for days. It is emotionally draining but I am happy to go through such experiences.

"That is what we work for. To get good roles," 'The Hate Story' actor avers.

Paoli, who is pitted with 'Apur Panchali' actor Parambrata Chatterjee In 'Mando Basar Galpo', recalls she has been working with the intelligent actor ever since 'Kalbela' "when both of us were younger."

"Then 'Thana Theke Aschhi',  'Hercules', 'Chhaya Manush' happened one by one, the last one having smaller space,  and now 'Mando Basar Galpo' where we are again having bigger space - me in the lead role of a cerebral and mercurial woman film maker having slipped into depression with some personal crisis and he as the doctor-friend who steers me from the situation," she explains.

"Since my equations with Param remain spontaneous as well, we can back up each other in scenes and our chemistry shows," she explains.

"This character of Ahana Sen, an internationally acclaimed woman director having gone through bouts of emotional highs and lows, is also extremely sensitive but I feel somewhere, somehow I can grasp the layers of such vulnerable women psyche being a woman myself even if that becomes emotionally draining,"

"And in a way many of my portrayals in different films, in Bengali and other languages including Hindi, portrayed this shade of vulnerability,"Paoli says.

To a related question, she says, "Have often faced the query but really I don't know why directors choose me for certain roles. May be playing this game of 'bhanga aar gara' make-and-unmake game) continuously in one film after another, I have started showing traits of such characters on my self and the film makers too started believing i will become their characters on screen."

Mandobasar Galpo, directed by Tathagata Banerjee, also casts busy Tollywood actor Indrashis Roy who comes to Ahana's life later on.
