The Flip Learning facility was inaugurated by Professor Saikat Maitra, Vice Chancellor, Maulana Abul Kalam University of Technology, Kolkata.
“Making classrooms effective and interesting and redefining student teacher relationship is the need of the day in modern educational style and JIS has always striven to incorporate new ideas to the entire training process," said Sardar Taranjit Singh, Managing Director, JIS Group.
According to JISCE, even though the new generation of Indian students are digitally native, in most cases, teaching and learning methodologies have not been able to keep pace with the times.
A recent survey has pointed out that 64 per cent of fresh Indian graduates are not acceptable to the industry or the corporate sector as these students are not equipped to apply their learning in most cases.
Flip Learning bridges the gap between students’ ability to consume information and their ability to apply the information that they have consumed in a coherent and intelligent way.
Traditionally, students are taught in class rooms and then they apply the concepts as part of the homework.
In a flipped classroom, the content is delivered to students before they reach the classroom. In the classroom, the students are encouraged to work on the concepts and discuss the same in the presence of a mentor.
Students carry out lower level cognitive tasks, such as understanding and remembering, on their own before coming to class. Once in class, students can concentrate on higher-level and more complicated tasks such as applying, analyzing, and critically evaluating the concepts.
In Flip Learning at JISCE, the knowledge is transferred to students before the class through supporting material digitally available well in advance.
In the classroom, students are offered a dynamic interactive group learning environment and an indirect instruction space in which a teacher’s role is elevated to that of a moderator in a live brainstorming session.
The concept of Flip Learning has been adopted in several universities across the world.
At JISCE, Flip Learning was initiated last winter by Princiapal Dr Malay R Dave, who has over five years of experience in teaching in Flip mode in the South Pacific.
After several introductory sessions and workshops, both with faculty and students, an informed decision was taken by the management to bring about this concept at JISCE.
To accommodate the Flip Learning facility, JISCE has alloted seven smart classrooms, with more in the pipeline.
A studio will also be provided 24x7 both for students and faculty to record digital contents at their leisure.
The initiatives have been appreciated by Dr. Francisco Marmolejo, Chief of Global Initiative of the World Bank, Dr. Cesare Onestini, Mission Head, European Union in India, and Professor Anil Sahasrabuddhe, Chairman, AICTE, who set through one of the Flip classroom sessions at the JISCE campus and launched the in-house publication on 'How to Flip Your Classroom'.
