Himalayan Club Kolkata to scale Plateau Peak in Ladakh
India Blooms News Service 01 Jul 2013, 06:35 am

Kolkata, June 30 (IBNS) A nine-member team from Kolkata section of Himalayan Club led by Debraj Datta left here Sunday to scale the 7287 metre high Plateu Peak which is also known as Saser Kangri VI in Karakoram in Ladakh under Jammu and Kashmir.
The Saser Kangri groups of peaks are situated in the Eastern Karakoram in the extreme northwest district of Ladakh, They are amongst the highest group of peaks in that area which lie between the Shyok and the Nubra rivers.
There are five major peaks within a radius of 10 km: Saser Kangri I (7672 m), Saser Kangri II (7518 m), Saser Kangri III (7495 m) and Saser Kangri IV (Cloud Peak) (7416 m) and Plateau Peak (7287 m) (also referred to as Saser Kangri VI by many).
While all the peaks sans the Plateau peak have been successfully climbed in the past, the Plateau peak, which is located adjacent to the Saser Kangri I peak, is still unascended and presents a truly attractive challenge to the mountaineers seeking new routes on unclimbed peaks.
Himalayan Club, Kolkata over the last three years have been successful on Mamostong Kangri and Saser Kangri IV in Ladakh region and Dome Kang and Jongsong peaks in the Sikkim Himalaya, all difficult 7000 m peaks.
Expedition leader Debraj Datta informed that they would follow the sheer and imposing western ridge of the Plateau peak as a means of climbing the top. He said the expedition would approach the mountain along the Phukpoche Nallah, South poche glacier and then attempt the Western approach to the peak.
The other team members are Subrate De – Dy.Leader , Pradeep Ch Sahoo , Chetna Sahoo , Parag Kr Mitra, Biplab Banerjee , Prasanta Gorai , Aadrito Paul and Ganesh Saha
According to the plan the team will reach Leh on July 4 via Manali and Sarchu. and set up Base Camp (4750m) on 9 July at the snout of South Phukpoche Glacier. They will need four more camps before making an attempt to the summit between 28 and 30 July .
