The temple was nominated in 2019.
This is India’s 39th UNESCO ascribed World Heritage Site.
About 120km by road from Hyderabad, the temple, officially known as the Rudreswar Temple, is over 800 years old. It is said to have been commissioned in 1213 AD by General Recharla Rudra during the reign of the Kakatiya dynasty.
The presiding deity is called Ramalinga Swamy (Shiva).
The temple is popularly referred to as Ramappa Temple. Ramappa was the sculptor who worked on the temple for over 40 years. The temple stands on a star-shaped six feet high platform. Statues of divine figures, tales from the scriptures, Kakatiyan culture, and other details are carved on the walls, ceilings and pillars of the temple.
