Mumbai: Imagine strolling by the Arabian Sea on a breezy evening, with wide walkways, a cycling track, shaded seating, and stunning views of Mumbai’s coastline.

The city’s brand-new 5.25-km sea promenade along the Coastal Road, opened to the public on Independence Day, now offers Mumbaikars and visitors a fresh way to experience the seaside—from Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy to Worli via Haji Ali and Baroda Palace.

Planned in phases by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the promenade adds a major public space along the Arabian Sea, featuring wide walkways, a dedicated cycling track, landscaped areas, shaded seating, and wheelchair-friendly ramps.

To facilitate pedestrian access, 19 underpasses are planned in total, with four already opened in the first phase—at Bhulabhai Desai Road (Akriti Park), Vatsala Bai Desai Chowk (Haji Ali), Worli Dairy, and Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk.

Amenities along the stretch include benches, litter bins, bio-toilets, drinking water facilities, plants, and cycle stands. Two multi-level underground parking facilities, with a combined capacity of nearly 400 vehicles, have been constructed at Bindu Madhav Thackeray Junction and near Worli Dairy.

Marking the first major sea-facing public space in South Mumbai since M Drive, the promenade enhances both coastal accessibility and civic infrastructure. The walkway is free to use, accessible only via pedestrian underpasses. Vehicles are not permitted to stop along the Coastal Road, where speed limits are fixed at 60 km/h inside tunnels and 80 km/h on open stretches.
