Travelling to South Africa may soon become easier for Indian tourists, with the country announcing visa-free entry for Indian passport holders. For many travellers, this marks a major shift, especially considering that obtaining a South African visa was often seen as difficult, time-consuming and, in some cases, prone to rejection.
However, while the new system removes the need for a traditional visa in many cases, Indian travellers still need to understand how the process works and who may not qualify for the visa-free access.
No More E-Visa or Sticker Visa
Under the new policy, Indian travellers no longer need to apply for an e-visa or a sticker visa to visit South Africa.
Instead, travellers will only need to fill out a free ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) form, simplifying the process significantly and removing visa costs.
This could mean avoiding the lengthy and often uncertain visa approval process that previously made travel planning difficult.
Who Cannot Use the ETA System?
Despite the announcement, not every Indian traveller will be eligible for the visa-free entry process. There are three categories of travellers who cannot avail of the ETA facility and will instead need to apply for a regular visa.
These include:
- Children below 18 years of age
- Minors are not eligible for the ETA process.
- Travellers arriving at airports outside the approved list
The visa-free ETA facility is available only for those landing at:
- Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport
- Cape Town International Airport
- Lanseria Airport
Those arriving at any other airport will not qualify.
- Travellers unable to scan their passport on the ETA website
This is reportedly a common issue with many Indian passports. If the passport cannot be scanned successfully on the portal, there is currently no workaround available.
In such cases, you will have to apply for a regular e-visa through the government website.
If You Need an E-Visa, Apply Early
Travellers who are not eligible for the ETA system should apply for their visa well in advance.
According to the current process, the government website can take considerable time to process applications and may require multiple documents. As an alternative, you may also use the mobile app Atlys to apply for a visa.
Do Not Book Flights Before Visa Approval
One major concern remains for travellers whose visa application is still under process.
If an application submitted through the government website remains pending, there is currently no clear solution or fast-track support available. You may simply have to wait for the process to be completed.
Because of this uncertainty, travellers are advised not to book flights or hotels before receiving visa approval. Getting the visa first may help avoid cancellations, financial losses and unnecessary complications in travel planning.
