Thailand has recently ended its visa-free entry scheme for Indian passport holders. The country's Cabinet has approved the rollback of the 60-day exemption in May 2026, bringing back visa requirements for one of its largest source markets.
Indian travellers can no longer enter Thailand without a visa and will instead need to obtain either a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or apply for an e-Visa before travelling.
The move marks a significant shift from the relaxed travel rules introduced to boost tourism after the pandemic.
Here is a look at what has changed and what Indian travellers now need to do before visiting Thailand.
From 60-Day Visa-Free Entry to Visa on Arrival
Thailand had introduced a temporary visa exemption for Indian nationals in November 2023, initially allowing a stay of up to 30 days. The scheme was later expanded in July 2024, enabling Indian travellers to visit the country without a visa and stay for up to 60 days.
The rollback forms part of Thailand's broader efforts to tighten immigration controls and address concerns over the misuse of the system by some foreign nationals.
As a result, Indian citizens are no longer eligible for visa-free entry. Instead, they now fall under the Visa on Arrival framework, while those who prefer to complete the formalities in advance also have the option of applying for an e-Visa before departure.
What Indian Travellers Need to Do Now
Indian tourists visiting Thailand should now plan ahead and ensure they have the necessary documentation.
Option 1: Visa on Arrival (VoA)
Eligible Indian travellers can obtain a Visa on Arrival at designated Thai immigration checkpoints.
Key points include:
- Permitted stay: Up to 15 days.
- Visa fee: 2,000 Thai Baht.
- Passport validity: At least six months from the date of entry.
- Proof of onward or return travel may be required.
- Proof of accommodation should be available.
- Travellers may be asked to demonstrate sufficient funds for their stay.
Option 2: Apply for an e-Visa
Those who prefer completing the process before departure can apply online through Thailand's e-Visa system.
The e-Visa route may be particularly useful for families and travellers who want to avoid queues at immigration counters.
Applicants typically need to submit:
- Passport details
- Recent photograph
- Travel itinerary
- Accommodation details
- Supporting documents as required
Thailand introduced its e-Visa system for applicants in India from January 2025, enabling eligible travellers to complete the process digitally.
Don't Forget the Digital Arrival Card
Apart from visa requirements, Indian travellers must also complete Thailand's Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entering the country.
The TDAC has replaced the traditional paper arrival form and is mandatory for foreign nationals entering Thailand.
Travellers should submit the form online within three days before arrival.
The form requires basic details such as:
- Passport information,
- Flight details,
- Accommodation address, and
- Personal information.
Importantly, the TDAC is not a visa and does not replace visa requirements.
Thai authorities have also warned travellers against using unofficial websites that charge money for the service, as the TDAC itself is free.
What This Means for Indian Tourists
For most Indian holidaymakers, the practical impact may be limited. Typical leisure trips to Thailand often last less than two weeks, meaning the 15-day Visa on Arrival may still be sufficient.
However, travellers who had been taking advantage of the earlier 60-day visa-free stay will now need to factor in additional paperwork, fees and processing requirements while planning their trips.
Those intending longer stays may find the e-Visa route more convenient.
