Malaysia remains visa-free for Indian passport holders, but travellers should make sure they meet the entry requirements before flying. The 30-day visa waiver has been extended through December 31, 2026, allowing Indians to enter Malaysia for tourism, business, social visits, or transit without obtaining a visa in advance.

However, visa-free entry does not mean travellers can arrive without supporting documents. Indian passport holders must have a passport valid for at least six months, a confirmed return flight ticket and a confirmed hotel booking. They must also complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online three days before their arrival. These documents may be checked during immigration and security screening.

Indians travelling to Malaysia for work need a visa

The latest reminder from the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur is particularly important for travellers considering Malaysia for employment. The mission has warned Indians against using the 30-day visa-free facility to enter the country in search of jobs. The warning follows a reported increase in Indians arriving after being lured by false employment offers from agents.

The visa-free arrangement does not permit employment in Malaysia. Indians travelling to the country to take up a job must have the appropriate work authorisation, such as a valid work permit or the required Visa With Reference (VDR). The High Commission has warned that those misusing the visa-free facility could face problems including overstaying, illegal immigration status, exploitation, detention or legal action.

For Indian tourists, a trip to Malaysia remains relatively straightforward through the end of 2026, provided they meet the entry conditions. Carrying the required documents and completing the MDAC before departure can help avoid problems at immigration, while anyone travelling for employment should arrange the correct work authorisation before entering the country.
