It started 34 weeks back by a heritage enthusiast and nature photographer Anil Gulati. He tweets from his handle @anil5 ‘live’ from the ground when he walks around these places in and around Bhopal. These are further shared and liked by many.
Tweets for this heritage walk have hashtag of #BhopalWalk. He is joined by many on the ground others while others on twitter during the walks .
‘The effort is to explore, tweet and promote lesser known places and things about Bhopal, for example Bhopal and districts around it have many rock art sites, normally only known in archaeology circles yet lesser known in social media or in general public’ shares Anil Gulati, of BhopalWalk.
‘I am not an expert but am interested to know more about things in and around my city and also promote them as my contribution to city which I live in’ Anil Gulati adds.
BhopalWalk has explored places like ‘Baba Jhiri’ where you still find prehistoric handtools, and is off Kolar road, new developing city area of Bhopal. This site one can find handtools of prehistoric times mainly earl stone and late stone age like tortoise core, cleaver, handaxe, flakes, scrapers, blades, cores and micoliths etc. Narayan Vyas, Senior Archaeologist, who is an expert on rock arts, many a times joins Anil Gulati on his walks. He helped BhopalWalk to explore sites like these which have heritage, history, diversity of flora and fauna, yet not on any tourism circuit.
Last Sunday which was 34th week of BhopalWalk, BhopalWalk explored Pengava, an unprotected rock arts site around 50 kilometers off Bhopal, located in the Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh.
It is ‘natural walk rock art museum’ which is on ground and can give you a view of rock arts in Madhya Pradesh shares Rajiv Choubey, who has seen these withered off since many years he have been visiting them.
Pengava rock shelter site has around 35 rock shelters, unprotected and few occupied by people living in the village. In one they have constructed a room also.
Narayan Vyas, shares that these shelters have rock paintings of Mesolithic to historical period. Interesting ones are chakravuyah and chariot in one shelter and has war scenes, animal figures etc in many.
Mohsin Khan of ANSH NGO, who works with young volunteers, shares that this was an interesting exposure for young people not only to have fun to drive outside Bhopal but exploring and understanding rock arts of earlier times which exist around us, yet lesser talked about.
For 34 weeks BhopalWalk used to be regular weekly Sunday walk between 11 – 1 pm, but now it will be monthly walk, but will be more indepth and engage more people, says Anil Gulati of BhopalWalk.
