Lumina Borealis: A secret wonderland in Canada
Breaking the myth that winter evenings are meant for staying indoors, Lumina Borealis debuts this winter in Ontario, Canada.

As time progressed, people forgot to find enjoyment in winter. Sad and lonely, the ‘spirit of winter’ finally decided that it was time to take things in its own hands. It cast a spell to hide its best attractions under a magic veil. “Only those who keep a warm heart will be able to lift this veil!” said the spirit as it waited for guests to arrive.

So this winter, be the guest to unravel the secrets hidden behind the veil at Lumina Borealis.

Nearly three hours’ drive from Toronto, the Lumina Borealis is a meandering and illuminated outdoor walking trail laid along the grounds of the Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada.

Running until Feb 4, 2017, this frozen wonderland packs in some fantastic sights and entertainment.

A snow-dusted forest of evergreens with woodland creatures to greet you, the Singing Aurora painting the fort walls with a coloured symphony, a cosy campfire by the Fireteller and then a visit to the Garrison Store for hot chocolate and festive treats are a few of the attractions that are bound to make your trip to Lumina Borealis a memorable one.

Photography is allowed but visitors are strictly forbidden to use any flash or torchlight.

The Lumina Borealis is a family-friendly event and the pathway, though not paved, is designed to accommodate mobility aids such as wheelchairs; however, as weather conditions change so might the ground conditions. Important: Service animals are allowed but no pets.

Also, it is recommended that you wear warm clothing, hat and mitts and boots or shoes that are comfortable for walking and appropriate for the weather.  Important: Fort Henry often has a breeze coming off Lake Ontario, so it can be chilly.

Although you can buy tickets at the site (subject to availability), it is better to buy them in advance online. The nearly hour-long walk is organised in batches limited to a fixed number of people. Parking and shuttle buses available. Important: Organisers advise arriving 15 minutes before your scheduled walk time.

Timing: Open from 5pm-11pm (last ticket time: 9.45pm). Open Thursday through Sunday evenings until Dec 23, 2016 and again from Jan 12 to Feb 4, 2017; open nightly from Monday between Jan 26 and Jan 8Important: Closed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
