In the book 'A Simple Guide To Banking', Divesh Mishra covers topics related to banking, such as banks, accounting, roles of bank, role of money, importance of people etc.
The book starts with comparing banking to a car and from that very moment it catches the attention of the reader.
The book is very reader friendly. The writer has kept in mind the psychology of the readers and motivated the readers to keep on reading the book.
The book has been written in a very simple language with comparisons which make it easier for the readers to understand.
It stands out from other books because of its approach towards the subject that it is dealing with.
Generally when we see books on commerce, banking, accounting etc, we thin of them as boring fat books with pages and pages of definitions and diagrams to mug up.
But this book is totally the opposite; a book which will make you want to read it and understand the concepts instead of mugging them up.
First all the general information has been given in the book like what is bank, what is banking, who needs banking the most, why is it needed and every other little thing has been given and then the more technical parts of banking has been discussed like the balance sheet and the parts of it, SLR and CRR, liabilities, assets and other such terms required in banking.
It even contains the role that a national bank of a country plays i.e. the role of Reserve Bank of India.
Then the next part is about how to keep record of transactions.
The accounting equation has also been given which is one of the most important things.
The writer has also included in his book the non- banking financial companies. Types and methods of Banking have also been explained in the book. Light has also been thrown on foreign exchange, non performing assets.
The book has covered such a vast area that it even includes PHIRST, which stands for Productivity, Housekeeping, Income, Relationship, Stress management, Turn Around Time.
Technical side and soft side have been highlighted.
Credit Rating Agencies, their disadvantages and advantages also have been covered with the second last part of the book being on Awareness Banking.
The very last part is just like a wrap up to the whole book.
The book is a must have for everyone looking for a career related to bank and banking.
Even school students can use it for their own better understanding of the subject.
Overall I’d like to rate the book 8/10. A different book talking about the same old subject in a completely different way.
