Chicago, with its glittering riverfront, soaring towers, iconic bridges, and thriving art and culture scene, never ceases to amaze. Each visit reveals something new, yet also deepens a familiar affection — a city that grows on me every time I return.
In the city where architecture and urban energy converge with stunning natural settings, my last stay was at the Royal Sonesta Chicago Downtown, where visitors find themselves at the centre of it all.
Perched along the iconic Chicago River, this hotel offers front-row views of the city’s famed bascule bridges, the kind of scene that defines the Windy City’s personality. So when my hosts chose Royal Sonesta Chicago Downtown for my two-day detox from deadlines, I was thrilled for more than one reason. For me a deal breaker in any world city is its location. I also love my rooms, comfortable yet with some touch of minimalism. This hotel fits the bill.
Location
Situated on East Wacker Drive, the hotel’s address is as central as it gets. From here, Chicago’s renowned architecture, theatres, shopping avenues, and cultural landmarks are just steps away. Whether it’s a walk along the Riverwalk, a short stroll to Millennium Park, or easy access to the Magnificent Mile, the location makes exploration seamless.
Rooms with views to remember
The highlight of the stay is undoubtedly the rooms. Spacious, bright, and designed with understated modern interiors, they strike a fine balance between comfort and functionality. The views overlooking the Chicago River, with the historic bridges lifting and lowering through the day, create a captivating backdrop.
The plush beds add another layer of indulgence, promising restful nights after long city explorations. Reflecting with a cup of coffee, I would watch from my room the sun dip behind Chicago’s soaring skyline, as twilight paints the river and bridges in gold and evening blue hues.
Dining and more
The dining experience at the hotel complements the stay well, with thoughtful options and attentive service. While Chicago is brimming with culinary adventures just outside the hotel, the in-house offerings provide a reliable and satisfying alternative. Located inside the Royal Sonesta Chicago Downtown and opening out to the city’s iconic riverfront, Hoyt’s Chicago brings a modern twist to classic American comfort food.
With a focus on locally sourced ingredients and market-driven menus, it offers vegetarian to gluten-free choices, the kitchen ensures inclusivity without compromising on flavour, while the creative cocktail program adds a sophisticated edge to the dining experience.
The ambiance at Hoyt’s is inviting. Guests can enjoy a warm, contemporary indoor setting or, in the warmer months, take their meals onto the patio overlooking the Chicago River for unforgettable views. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, the restaurant caters to every occasion.
Thoughtful design and inviting lobby
The interiors reflect a modern aesthetic without being loud — a style that enhances functionality while retaining elegance. The lobby, opening onto the main street, sets the tone for the hotel: inviting, and designed as a lively meeting point. I would often sit by the lobby window and watch Chicago outside.
Service with warmth
Staff courtesy, especially at reception, makes guests feel instantly welcome. Room service was efficient and attentive, even going the extra step to assist with small details like the in-room coffee machine — the kind of service that makes a difference.
