Azerbaijan has introduced a temporary visa-on-arrival facility for foreign visitors travelling to Baku for the 2026 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, giving Indian F1 fans an easier way to make a last-minute race trip.
The facility is available to foreign nationals and stateless persons arriving at Azerbaijan’s international airports between August 25 and September 30, 2026, provided they have the required F1-related documentation. Indian passport holders are eligible under this arrangement.
F1 ticket can get you the visa on arrival
Travellers do not need to go through the regular visa process if they qualify for the special F1 arrangement. They must carry either a physical or electronic ticket for the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, proof that the ticket has been purchased, or an appropriate accreditation document issued by Formula One Management, the FIA or the Baku City Circuit Operations Company.
The visa can be obtained at an international airport in Azerbaijan on arrival.
For Indian travellers, this is a temporary alternative to Azerbaijan's usual entry procedure. India is normally among the countries whose citizens can apply for an Azerbaijan e-visa, with the standard process requiring an application at least three working days before arrival. The regular e-visa allows a single entry and up to 30 days in the country.
A timely option for this weekend's race
The timing makes the measure particularly relevant right now. The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix is being held at Baku City Circuit from September 24 to 26, with the Formula 1 race scheduled for Saturday, September 26. The race has been moved from its usual Sunday slot this year to accommodate Azerbaijan's National Remembrance Day on September 27.
The Baku race itself is one of the more distinctive stops on the F1 calendar. The 6.003-km street circuit combines long, fast sections with tight corners through the city, including sections close to Baku's historic centre. The circuit first hosted Formula 1 in 2016, when it was known as the European Grand Prix, before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix name was introduced in 2017.
Sporting events can make short trips easier
The temporary arrangement also highlights how major international sporting events can bring short-term changes to normal visa procedures. Instead of applying in advance through the standard system, eligible fans can use their connection to the event — in this case, an F1 ticket or accreditation — to obtain a visa at the airport. The facility, however, is strictly time-bound: travellers must arrive by September 30, and those visiting Azerbaijan without qualifying F1 documents need to follow the country's regular visa process.
For Indian travellers, the development is a useful reminder to check for event-specific entry arrangements when planning international trips around major sporting events. While such facilities are temporary and tied to specific events, they can reduce the advance visa-planning involved in a short overseas sports break.
